The Mexican authorities on Monday put forward a new plan to help minors to return or stay at home when they try to migrate to the United States illegally.

The plan, funded by bank HSBC, will provide 40 million pesos (3.1 million U.S. dollars) to offer health, education, food supports to teenagers between 13 to 17 years old. The fund will be handled by the state-run Comprehensive Family Integration System (DIF) and the National Migration Agency.

Some 19,000 minors tried to cross from Mexico into the United States illegally, according to state data.

Margarita Zavala, head of the DIF and wife of President Felipe Calderon, said the plan was to offer those teenagers a chance to resume their lives at home. The DIF has built hostels near the border with the U.S. to help achieving the goal.

She added that many minors returned to the nation with a great deal of fear, which means they need medical and psychological supports to return to their previous lives.
