Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde said Tuesday that different ideologies on economic development, international issues and ties with the Unites States among countries of the region make their integration difficult.
Garcia, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) since July, said that of the regional blocs, the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) "has not finished its integration" due to these reasons, while the CAN continues with internal differences.
"That is what we are facing, and we should make an exercise of honesty, to know which are our difficulties, try to deal with them together and expand the cooperation field," Garcia said.
Garcia said that the "only possibility" for the CAN to continue its work is to leave aside the controversial issues and work on those issues that can bring about cooperation.
The CAN groups Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia.
