The Pentagon on Tuesday issued a cautious note on a foiled mutiny plot in Georgia, saying it appeared to be an "isolated incident."

"It looks like a fairly isolated incident at this point," Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said at the regular Pentagon press briefing, adding the United States is "still assessing the situation."

He stressed that the incident "doesn't change our long-term relationship with Georgia."

Whitman bypassed a question related to Georgia's accusations of Russian involvement in the mutiny, saying he didn't have any information on it at hand.

Earlier, Georgian officials said a former Georgian special forces commander and a tank battalion commander were arrested Tuesday for allegedly organizing an attempted mutiny that ended peacefully when most participants surrendered.

Georgian officials alleged that preliminary investigation showed that the plot "was coordinated with the Russians" and was "aimed at disrupting the NATO training scheduled to take place in Georgia on May 6."

Russia denied any involvement in the mutiny, called the accusations "ridiculous."
