The Mexican government on Monday expressed its solidarity with and condolences to the Italian government and people after a deadly earthquake hit central Italy.

"Mexico wishes to send a message of solidarity to the towns in the Italian region of Abruzzo, and in particular to L'Aquila, the medieval city founded in the 13th century and regional capital that is the worst-hit spot in the region," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The government also expressed its sincere condolences to the victims' families and said that it deeply regretted that the event had occurred.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Italy's mountainous Abruzzo region before dawn Monday, leaving at least 150 people dead, 1,500injured and many more missing.

L'Aquila, where the quake was centered, was worst hit. Most quake-related deaths were reported in the city, which has 70,000 residents and is famous for medieval relics.
