Luis Fortuno, who favors Puerto Rico to be a U.S. state, took over as governor of the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico Friday with a message of "dreaming into a better future."
He was inaugurated at the U.S Caribbean territory's Capitol in San Juan, agencies reported.
Among the several thousands of people who attended the sworn-inceremony were the president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, and U.S. pop star Jennifer Lopez.
"When sworn in as the governor, I am inspired by the future ahead," said Fortuno, who leaves the post as a nonvoting delegate for Puerto Rico in the U.S. Congress.
He said handling the island's economic crisis will be his first priority and vowed to control government spending.
Fortuno, 48, defeated incumbent governor Anibal Acevedo Vila inan election last November.
President-elect Barack Obama sent a message to Fortuno's inauguration, promising to resolve the island's status in the nextfour years.
