Four Americans found dead in northern Mexico near the border with the United States are believed to have been the victims of drug violence, Mexico's Public Security Ministry said Monday.

Police discovered the bodies of three men and a woman in a car abandoned in remote scrubland near the border with California Sunday, according to the ministry.

Medical experts said the victims had been dead for more than one week. The border area in Baja California state's Rosarito municipality, where the bodies were found, is believed one of many cocaine and marijuana smuggling hot spots.

Investigations revealed that the victims were U.S. citizens. The car had California license plates and a U.S. driver's license was found.

Some 1,300 people have been killed in drug violence in Mexico this year and more than 2,500 lost their lives in 2007.
