The United States said Thursday it is concerned about the escalation of violence in the Middle East.

"We are concerned about any ongoing violence, but note that the Israelis and Palestinians continue to discuss the way ahead," U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

At least 20 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were killed on Wednesday in a fresh outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip, media reports said.

Washington has tried its efforts to push forward the Middle East peace process by hosting an international conference on the Middle East peace in Annapolis, Maryland, last year. However, the Middle East peace process has made little progress since then.
