Peruvian Naval Rear Admiral Mario Sanchez has been appointed as commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), to replace Division Gen. Rafael Barni, Peru's Defense Ministry said on Friday.

Mario Sanchez will assume the post on March 30.

Expressing his satisfaction with the appointment, Peruvian Defense Minister Antero Flores-Araoz said it was accomplished by UN consensus "after a strict international selection process that included high-level candidates from other countries."

Flores-Araoz said Peruvian military officers, like Sanchez, are well prepared and qualified to carry out tasks they are assigned.

The UN's mission in Cyprus, which has been stationed since 1964,comprises soldiers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Austria, Canada, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Britain.

Flores-Araoz highlighted that Sanchez will represent Peru, supervising the cease fire and carrying out humanitarian actions, among other activities.
