At least nine people were killed and seven others injured in a shootout related to drug traffickers in eastern Guatemala on Tuesday, according to reports reaching here.

Faustino Sanchez, spokesperson of police in Guatemala said the shootout took place in Zacapa province. Six men including two Mexicans who were carrying automatic rifles and grenades were arrested by police.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the shootout between drug traffickers, Sanchez said. At least 12 people escaped from the spot and several dozens of policemen were sent to prevent them from fleeting outside the country.

The area in Zacapa province is on a transshipment route for drugs heading from Colombia to the United States where drug trafficking frequently took place.
