Snowstorm blanked much of New York City on Friday, creating trouble for morning commute and delaying traffic at area airports by up to four and a half hours.

The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, which will remain in effect until early morning Saturday, for the city and surrounding areas, and forecast snow accumulation of 6 to 9 inches (15.3 to 22.9cm).

At the John F. Kennedy International Airport, arriving flights were delayed by an average 4 hours and 20 minutes; at La Guardia Airport, 3 hours and 8 minutes; and Newark International Airport across the Hudson River, 2 hours and 37 minutes. Delays are also reported for departing flights. Some other flights were diverted.

According to the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Upton, New York, evening commute in the city could become even more treacherous as precipitation changes to a mixture of snow and fleet, creating a coating of ice accumulation.
