A total of 196 deaths were registered on Brazilian roads from Dec. 22 to Dec. 25, the highest number for Christmas holiday over the past 20 years, the Federal Road Police said Wednesday
Up to 2,561 traffic accidents were reported and 1,870 people got injured during this period, making the Christmas season the most violent holiday on Brazilian roads in 2007, surpassing the Carnival.
In Brazil, alcohol abuse and reckless driving traditionally lead to a rise in traffic accidents during Carnivals. This year, police registered 2,417 accidents, 145 deaths and 1,587 injuries.
The police stressed that reckless driving was the main factor to road accidents in Christmas too, while they also attributed the increase of vehicles on roads as well as the rainfalls in mid-west and southeast Brazil as reasons for the increased number of accidents.
The worst traffic accident took place Sunday, when a bus collided with a truck, killing 11 people and injuring 23 in the city of Sao Desiderio in the Bahia state.
