The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has decided to dispatch an ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the official news agency KCNA reported Friday.

The DPRK made the decision to "further expand and develop the friendly and cooperative relations with ASEAN as required by the developing reality," said the report, citing a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

The DPRK has always paid deep attention to the development of relations with ASEAN, which has emerged as a powerful political and economic force promoting regional peace, stability and prosperity on the principle of respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and equality, the report said.

The DPRK joined the ASEAN Regional Forum in 2000 and became a party to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia in 2008.
