Arms depot rocked by huge blasts in Turkmenistan

A series of explosions ripped through an arms depot outside Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat Thursday, EurasiaNet reported.

The first massive explosion occurred at about 4:40 pm in Abadan, situated about 20 kilometers to the west of Ashgabat. Witnesses said that the initial explosion was followed by a series of lesser blasts. Rockets could be seen sailing through the sky and exploding, artillery shells were also reportedly detonating throughout the town.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Witnesses said military, law enforcement agencies, and fire brigades were on the scene, and an evacuation of residents was underway.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosions.
