A former mayor in southern Philippines' Sulu province died while his wife was injured when they were waylaid by still unidentified suspects in Zamboanga City on Monday morning, police said.

Zamboanga City police chief Edwin de Ocampo said investigations are still ongoing so as to the identities of the suspects and their motive although they are looking into the "political angle."

De Ocampo said the former Maimbung town mayor Najib Maldisa and his wife, Ahiba Maldisa, were aboard a car and traversing the Public Cemetery when they were ambushed at around 8:15 a.m.

"They were aboard their service car drived by the mayor's wife when (suspects onboard) two big bike motorcycles blocked their way and shot them close range using cal 45," "The ex-mayor suffered six gunshot wounds at forehead and breast, " said de Ocampo.

De Ocampo said the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital but the former mayor died while undergoing surgery operation. His wife remains confined at the hospital.
