Magnitude-5.5 quake strikes off Sumatra, Indonesia

A quake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit Sumatra island of Indonesia on Tuesday, the country's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

The aftershock struck at 10:01 a.m. (0301 GMT) with the epicenter at 22 km southeast Tarutung of North Sumatra and at a depth of 10 km, the agency said.

However, the U.S. Geological Survey determined the earthquake at 5.4 on the Richter scale, saying the epicenter was monitored at 1.8530 degrees north latitude and 99.1500 degrees east longitude with a depth of 8.20 km.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
