Sri Lankan foreign employment bureau officials said Monday that they were aware of at least 41 Sri Lankans who are involved in a hunger strike in Iraq.

Officials said the workers are protesting against the non- payment of wages and they had proceeded to Iraq against official advice which directs Sri Lankans not to travel to Iraq in view of the unstable security situation in that country.

A sizable number of Sri Lnakans went to Iraq for employment prior to the breakout of the United States led war on Iraq in 2003. Since beginning of the war the Sri Lankan authorities have banned its nationals from leaving for jobs in Iraq.
