Two policemen were killed and nine others were injured as twin explosions hit Mehterlam, the capital of Laghman province, 90 km east of Afghan capital Kabul on Friday night, Interior Ministry said in a press release on Saturday.

"Two mines planted by anti-government militants close to a police check point in Mehterlam city last night and both the devices exploded with a span of few minutes killing two policemen on the spot and wounding nine others," the press release added.

Anti-government activities have been on rise since May 1 when Taliban announced to launch spring offensive against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in Afghanistan.

More than 40 people including security personnel and civilians have been killed and over 70 others were injured since the beginning of June in Afghanistan.
