A New People's Army (NPA) officer has been captured by government forces during a raid on a rebel safehouse in the northern Philippine province of Quezon, the military said Friday.

Col. Generoso Bolina, spokesman of the military's Southern Luzon Command, said the rebel, Cruzaldy Villalon Hernandez, yielded several war materials during the operation.

Quoting initial information, Bolina said Hernandez was nabbed by forces of the 74th Infantry Battalion who swooped down on his lair around 4 p.m. Thursday at Bacong Ilaya village in General Luna town.

Hernandez is a liaison officer of the guerilla unit of the Quezon provincial party committee.

Recovered from him were a rifle, a shotgun, a box of ammunition for M16 rifle, military uniforms, and "other materials of high intelligence value," said Bolina, adding troops were still scouring the area, searching for a cal .50 machine gun supposedly hidden at the lair.

The Philippine National Police is preparing appropriate charges against Hernandez, said Bolina.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. The Philippine military estimates that there are some 4,700 NPA guerrilla fighters scattered in more than 60 provinces throughout the Southeast Asian country.

In Feburary, the Philippine government and the leftist rebels resumed formal peace talks which had been suspended for six years in Oslo, Norway, in a bid to bring an end to the protracted insurgency.
