The Kyrgyz Parliament and the U.S. administration signed a memorandum on bilateral cooperation in Bishkek Thursday.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, which was attended by officials from a visiting U.S. House of Representatives delegation, Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Akhmatbek Keldibekov said the document would help further promote effective ties between the Kyrgyz Parliament and the U.S. Congress and government.

Cooperation between Bishkek and Washington "has been developing at quite a rapid pace, including in the fight against terrorism, religious extremism and drug trafficking," he said.

"The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan is ready to support this cooperation at the legislative level," the speaker said.

Commenting on Kyrgyzstan's economic situation, Keldibekov said the country planned to "stop using foreign aid to support its budget" next year.

"The republic has every possibility to replenish its budget only with the help of its domestic resources," he said.

Also on Thursday, a representative of the U.S. embassy in Bishkek told Interfax Kyrgyzstan and the United States would begin yearly bilateral consultations in Washington, D.C. on June 9 to 10.

A Kyrgyz government delegation led by Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbekov will meet with high-ranking officers of the U.S. Department of State.
