Local official shot dead by rebels in S. Philippines

A local transportation official in southern Philipines was shot dead by suspected leftist rebels, a military official said Thursday.

According to Lt. Col. Leopoldo Galon, spokesman of the military 's Eastern Mindanao Command, the victim, Gerry Depatimpos Banggan, the head of Land Transportation Office in Ozamis City was walking towards the entrance of a tennis court Wednesday afternoon when two members of New People's Army onboard a motorbike attaked him.

Banggan died on the spot due to two fatal wounds he sustained in the head.

The police are investigating the motive behind the killing.
