The lower house of Australian federal parliament on Thursday passed a motion to establish an inquiry into Australia's immigration detention network.

System of Australia's immigration detention network has been under intense pressure over the past few months as a number of violent protests occurred in detention facilities in Christmas Island and Sydney's Villawood detention center.

The motion, put forward by opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison, and has been amended by the Greens, will take the form of a joint select committee to conduct the inquiry.

The joint select committee will examine if any reforms are needed to the immigration network.

It also will investigate the previous riots happened in Christmas Island and Sydney's detention centers, as well as consider the impact of length of detention and the appropriateness of facilities and services for asylum seekers.

The impact of detention on children and families, and the effectiveness and long-term viability of outsourcing immigration detention center contracts to private providers will also be investigated.

According to Morrison, he looked forward the motion to receive support from the Senate as well.
