6.3 magnitude quake rocks Sumatra, Indonesia

A shallow undersea quake measuring at 6.3 Richter scale struck off Sumatra island earlier Monday, but it was not potential for tsunami and caused no damage, officials said here on Monday.

The quake struck at 01:23 a.m. Jakarta time Monday (1824 GMT Sunday) with epicenter 409 km southwest Bintuhan of Benglulu province and with the depth 10 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Andri Sembiring told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 2 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity), he said.

A local official of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency Yudi Lesmana told Xinhua by phone that there was no immediate reports of damage or fatality. The USGS reported that the quake was at 5.9 magnitude. Indonesia sits on a quake-prone zone so called the Papcific Ring of Fire.
