A magnitude-5.0 earthquake rocked the central Philippine region of Visayas late Sunday afternoon, Philippine seismologists said. No damage has been reported yet.

The quake struck at 5:15 p.m. at a depth of 12 kilometers and 36 kilometers southwest of Iloilo City, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in its online bulletin. The quake was tectonic in origin, the institute said, warning of possible aftershocks.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake had a magnitude of 4.7 and a depth of 52.5 kilometers.

The Philippines sits in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where continental plates collide, producing frequent quakes and volcanic activities.
