Casualties were feared as a blast took place Thursday afternoon near a stadium checkpost in the Miranshah area of North Waziristan in northwest Pakistan, reported local Urdu TV channel Duniya.

According to the report, the blast occurred at about 3:30 p.m. local time in the afore-said area, followed by some firing. Security forces have arrived at the scene and ordered all the shops nearby the blast site to be closed.

Other details about the blast are not immediately available as Miranshah is located in the country's remote tribal area bordering Afghanistan.

Following the killing of the al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden by the U.S. forces in Pakistan early this month, a series of terrorist activities have been reported in the country, most of which are masterminded by Pakistan Taliban to avenge the death of bin Laden.

It is not clear at this point whether Thursday afternoon's blast in Miranshah is related to this revenge or not.

A couple of days ago news coming in from Afghanistan said that Afghanistan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar got killed while on the way moving from Pakistan's southwest city Quetta to North Waziristan.

But the report was later denied by both Afghanistan Taliban and Pakistan Taliban and the Afghan authorities also could not confirm the news.
