India Monday condemned the terrorist attack at a Pakistani naval base in the port city of Karachi in which some 16 people have been reportedly killed, saying that India is sad at the "loss of lives" in the attack.

"We are sad at the loss of lives in Pakistan, which is today a troubled state," Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram told the media in the national capital.

The Indian Home Minister also said that the central government has put all the states on alert in the wake of the Taliban attack on the Pakistani naval airbase in Karachi.

"An alert has been issued in this regard," he said.

At least 16 people were killed in fierce battle between Pakistani security forces and a group of armed Taliban militants who stormed into the Mehran naval airbase in Karachi Sunday night and destroyed two U.S.-made surveillance planes.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that it was part of revenge for the May 2 American raid that killed al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden and that their men had orders to fight till death.
