Two earthquakes --5.8 magnitude and 5.3 magnitude -- hit north and south Philippines, respectively, early Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The 5.8-magnitude earthquake happened at 00:42 a.m. Monday at sea adjacent to Occidental Mindorro, north Philippines, with a depth of 117 km., while the other was located at sea near General Santos City in southern Mindanao region, with a depth of 139 km.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake woke up some residents of Manila, Philippines' capital, and was likewise felt 35 km off Batangas and 51 km from Calapan, Mindoro.

The Philippines sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where continental plates collide producing frequent earthquakes and volcanic activities.
