Thai military, police to provide safety during election

Army official said on Wednesday he was confident that the police will be able to maintain law and order during the election campaign, set to be held July 3, Thai National News Bureau reported.

First Army commander Udomdej Seetabutr said military forces along the border was also instructed to prevent the illegal smuggle of weaponry.

Udomdej also said that police would be responsible for the security of the public during the election campaign whereas the 1st Army Area and the Internal Security Operations Command provided them with leads concerning security issues.

They have been continuously tracking and following suspected gunmen, yet remained neutral in the political scene. However, he expected the scale of violence for the election this year to be at the minimum level.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday announced that the House of Representatives were dissolved and that the general election will be held on July 3.
