Police seize 500 weapons in northern Afghan province

Police in northern Baghlan province in Afghanistan intercepted a truck and discovered over 500 pieces of weapons including pistols and AK-47, provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said Tuesday.

"Our police intercepted a truck in routine search and found over 500 pieces of weapons including 45 assault rifle AK-47 Kalashnikovs, 450 pistols and thousands of bullets," Rahimi told reporters.

He added that one person has been arrested in this connection and investigation is underway to unearth the network involved in smuggling arms and ammunition to the northern region.

On Monday, governor of northern Balkh province Atta Mohammad Noor said that security forces had discovered 80 pieces of weapons in the provincial capital Mazar-e-Shairf and foiled Taliban attempt to disrupt law and order in the province.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have launched spring offensive since May 1 and carried out a series of attacks in southern Kandahar province last weekend which left 65 people dead and injured.
