A mayor in central Philippines succumbed to injuries in a hospital early Sunday after unidentified armed men ambushed him and another local official Saturday evening, police said.

Calbayog City Mayor Reynaldo Uy and Samar Board Member Atty. Eunice Babalcon were shot in Poblacion village, Hinabangan town in Samar province at around 9:00 p.m. Saturday, said Philippine National Police spokesman Agrimero Cruz Jr.

"Mayor Uy was declared dead at 1:00 a.m. May 1, 2011 by the attending physicians at St. Pauls Hospital," said Cruz.

An investigating team was immediately activated, Cruz added.
