A shallow undersea quake with the magnitude of 6.0 rocked Sumatra island of Indonesia on Friday, but it was not potential for tsunami and there was no report of damage or casualty, officials said.

The quake struck at 15:56 p.m. Jakarta time (0856 GMT) with the epicenter at 63 km Meulaboh town of Aceh province in the northern tip of Sumatra island and with the depth at 20 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Arief Nurachim told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Meulaboh town, he said.

An official of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency in Aceh province Sri Wahyuni told Xinhua by phone from the province that there was no building damage or fatality after the quake, including in the hardest hit area of Meulaboh town.

"So far there are no impacts of the quake, no damage nor injured," she said.In December 2004, over 170,000 people were killed and massive destruction of infrastructures by tsunami triggered by a strong quake in Aceh province was inflicted in coastal areas of countries bordering with the Indian Ocean.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called the " Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet, often triggering seismic and volcanic movements.
