The militants attack on a police department in Kandahar city on Thursday killed nine persons including three attackers and wounded 12 others, provincial police chief Khan Mohammad Mujahid said.

"In the clash triggered by insurgents nine people including six security personnel and three rebels had been killed and 12 police sustained injuries," Mujahid told newsmen at a press conference.

The situation is under control and all the attackers had been eliminated in the clash that lasted for around three hours, he said.

Earlier a statement released by the Kandahar provincial administration stated, "Some anti-government insurgents occupied an under-construction building in Kandahar city this morning and began attacking the police department but the police in retaliation have eliminated three attackers."

A group of militants raided the police department in 5th precinct of Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province, 450 km south of Afghan capital Kabul, with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms at around 10:00 a.m. local time.

On the other hand, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit claimed responsibility for the attack and in talks with media via telephone from an unknown location said that four suicide bombers targeted the police department and killed over two dozens of police and foreign soldiers inside the compound.

Meantime, Kandahar police chief Mujahid rejected the claim, saying just six security personnel had been killed and 12 others sustained injuries.

The police chief also added that militants first detonated an explosive-lade ambulance and then began attacking the police department.

This is the second brazen attack on police in Kandahar, the birthplace of Taliban militants, carried out by Taliban fighters since the beginning of this year.

In the previous attack on a police department on Feb. 12 in Kandahar city 16 security personnel and seven insurgents were killed and 43 others including 12 policemen were injured.
