Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), stressed the need to increase production on a scientific-technological basis in his recent inspections to industrial establishments in Jagang Province, the official news agency KCNA reported on Wednesday.

According to the KCNA, Kim, the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the National Defense Commission of the DPRK, recently inspected the Jagangdo Refinery and Amnokgang Tire Factory. He expressed great satisfaction over the work done by the workers and highly appreciated their feat.

The stirring change of the factories clearly proves once again the validity of the principle that the increase of production lies in the development of science and technology, he said.

He urged the factories to keep production going at a high rate by intensifying technological innovation, in order to steadily increase production.

Kim was accompanied by Kim Jong Un, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK, and other senior officials.

The KCNA didn't disclose the exact dates of his inspections.
