Sri Lankan ruling party takes early lead in local poll results

Sri Lanka's ruling party has taken early lead in Thursday's local polls results, officials said.

By 2:3O a.m. local time Friday the ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had won power in 26 of the 32 councils as results declared.

The main opposition United National Party had taken control of four councils while the main Tamil party, the TNA had won control of two councils in the former Tamil Tiger rebel controlled regions in the island's north.

Over 9 million people were eligible to vote in the elections for 234 of the 335 councils throughout the island.

Police said one man was killed and seven others were injured during clashes that took place on election day although some 70, 000 police and army personnel were in place for the security.
