Japanese national television network, NHK, has shown major tsunami damage in northern Japan Friday, following a powerful earthquake Friday afternoon.

NHK footages showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

Earlier, Japan's meteorological agency warns that a tsunami as high as 6 meters could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter.

The agency says the quake struck at 2:46 pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometers, about 120 kilometers off the eastern coast.
