Singh also inaugurated the Jagti Satellite Township for Kashmiri migrant Pandits (Hindus).

Pandits left the Muslim dominated areas of the region in the wake of anti-India insurgency in 1989 and settled in winter capital and other Indian states.

Authorities have made elaborate security arrangements across the region especially in Jammu city to ward off an eventuality. "Adequate security arrangements were put in place ahead of this high-profile visit,"said a senior police official posted in Jammu city.

This was the Indian Prime Minister's first visit to the region after last year's summer unrest in Muslim dominated areas. More than 100 people were killed and scores were wounded in police and paramilitary shooting on protesters.

A guerrilla war is also going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in the region over the past two decades.

Separatists in the region have been demanding end of New Delhi' s rule in the region.
