Indonesia prepares rice seeds in anticipating climate change issue: minister

Indonesian farming ministry is preparing three kinds of rice seeds to secure the sustainability of rice deposit in the country in anticipating the impact of climate change issue, a minister said here on Wednesday.

Indonesian Farming Minister Siswono said that those three rice seeds are apparently adaptive to extreme natural conditions related to climate change phenomenon. Those three paddy seeds were code named Inpara, Inpago and Inpari 13. The Inpara seeds is able to grow in extreme wet condition, capable to grow amid in the puddle. Inpago is capable to grow in drought soil, meanwhile the Inpari 13 is pest proof variety.

"The preparation on those three rice seeds is one of our anticipating plans in dealing with climate change issue. We hope that there will be no vacated farming area as we already have the correct seeds while the climate change phenomenon is underway at the moment,"the minister said on the sidelines of economic coordinating ministers' meeting held here.

He said that his ministry is always making intensive communications with the country's climate, meteorology and geophysics agency (BMKG) in monitoring the weather and ongoing climate so as to make the farming process conducted by the farmers can be carried out well.

From the intensive communications with BMKG, the minister learned that the rainy days in Indonesia will be ensuing to May this year.

Indonesia is expecting grand rice harvesting period from March to April this year. Siswono said that his ministry has prepared plans to improve the quality of rice harvested in the upcoming harvesting period.

"We would deploy at least 1,000 rice dryer machines for the farmers. We expect to see better quality of rice harvested by the farmers,"the minister said.
