Security forces during an ongoing military operation in Khwaja Ghar district of Afghanistan's Takhar province, 245 km north of capital city Kabul, have killed two militants and captured a dozen others, district governor said Thursday.

"The operation has been continuing since Wednesday and so far two Taliban insurgents were killed and 12 others detained," governor of Khwaja Ghar district, Mullah Omar, told Xinhua over cell phone.

Afghan and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force ( ISAF) forces are involved in the operation to ensure security in the district and clear the area of militants, he said.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have yet to make comment.

Takhar and the neighboring Kunduz province have been experiencing increasing militancy over the past couple of years despite continued military operations since mid 2010.

The NATO and Afghan forces have stepped up cleanup and search operations over the past couple of months to clear the districts and towns from militants across the conflict-ridden Afghanistan.
