Around 50 pilgrims were killed in a fatal stampede in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala on Friday evening, local media reported.

The tragedy occurred when a jeep ploughed through a crowd of pilgrims who were returning after a ritual in a narrow trekking path of the forest in Idukki district of Kerala. When the jeep overturned, it triggered the stampede as the pilgrims tried to run away, local police said.

Many injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals, and the toll could go up, according to local police.
