Afghan and NATO-led troops during a combine operation in Taliban birthplace Kandahar in southern Afghanistan arrested five insurgents including a local commander on Saturday, NATO-led forces said in a statement on Sunday.

"Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban commander along with four suspected insurgents during a security operation in Panjwai district of Kandahar province yesterday," the statement said without identifying the name of the arrested commander.

The Taliban commander is responsible for supplying insurgents in his group with weapons, emplacement of improvised explosive devices and attacks against checkpoints and civilian targets in the district.

No women or children were injured or detained during this operation, the statement said. Taliban fighters have yet to make any comment.
