Magnitude-6.6 earthquake hits Pacific islands

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale hit Loyalty Islands in the Pacific, according to a release by the Hong Kong Observatory at 0657 GMT on Wednesday.

The epicenter was initially determined to be at 22.2 degrees south altitude and 171.6 degrees east longitude, about 530 km east of Noumea.
