India put Mumbai and Ahmadabad, the state capital of Gujarat, on the alert after getting specific intelligence that terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) had sent militants to the two cities to strike at any time in coming days, The Times of India reported on electronic edition Wednesday.

"We alerted these two cities on Monday. House-to-house search is going on in both Mumbai and Ahmadabad as we have some location- specific intelligence inputs," the report quoted a senior home ministry official as saying.

He said specific instructions had been issued for taking all possible steps to foil any attempt by LeT terrorists to unleash violence, said the report.

Additional forces have been deployed in all sensitive and crowded areas, including markets, religious places, bus and railway stations.

Special precautions are also being taken in view of huge gatherings at some places in both the cities during Christmas and New Year celebrations, according to the report.
