Explosion heard near Pakistani air base: report

A huge explosion was heard near an air force base in Pakistan's central Punjab province Thursday evening, local TV channels reported.

There was no official word on the explosion.

TV channels reported that the blast was heard in Sargodha, a main city in Punjab.

Regional Police Officer Mian Javed Islam told Geo television that he has not received any information about the blast and the air force aircraft may have crossed sound barriers.

Rescue teams and ambulances rushed to Tariq Abad locality in the city. A main air base and several important offices are located in the area, TV channels said.

Shops were closed and the people started running to safe places, reports said.

Correspondents said that the explosion was heard in the while city of hundreds of thousands of people. Nature of the blast was not clear, they said.
