Moderate earthquake hits northeast India

A moderate earthquake on Saturday hit parts of northeast India, though there were no reports of casualty or damage of properties, a senior government official said.

"The quake measured 5 on the Richter Scale and tremors were felt in Assam-Meghalaya region at 12:32 p.m.. The epicenter of the quake was in Meghalaya's Garo hills near Assam border," the official of the Central Seismological Observatory said.

Senior officials have rushed to the spot to assess the situation.

Earlier, a slight intensity earthquake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, hit areas near the Indian-Bangladesh border Friday night, reported the Press Trust of India.

The report quoted Meteorological Department of India in New Delhi as saying the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 22: 54 p.m., was at 23.6 degrees North latitude and 90.7 degrees East longitude.

No loss of life or damage to property has been reported, said the report.
