Local police captured on Tuesday the kidnapper behind last month's abduction of a Filipino-Chinese trader in southern Philippines, local police said Thursday.

The suspect, Faisal Salik, was arrested at a checkpoint set up to intercept him in this city, according to local police chief Senior Superintendent Willy Dangane.

"He (Salik) was identified by Tay's security guards as one of the gunmen who took the businessman," Dangane said.

Police said Salik belong to the group of Tahir Alonto and Mayangkang Saguile, commanders of the Pentagon, a notorious kidnap- for-ransom gang.

Salik was then with two men, but the two were later released as no evidence could be found linking them to the kidnapping of Nestor Tay, owner of New Asian Marketing.

Tay, 45, was abducted on Aug. 16, and was released three days later when his relatives paid an undetermined amount to his captors.
