Fifty people were feared killed in a bus accident on Wednesday in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, reported local TV channel Times Now on Thursday.

Earlier reports by local media said at least 18 people were killed when an overcrowded bus fell into Bagdi river in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district. More than 30 passengers were still missing.

The accident took place late Wednesday when a private bus with around 80 passengers on board skidded off and fell into the overflowing Bagdi river.

Rescue workers were trying to pull the bus out of the river with the help of a crane, said the reports.

Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world with at least 100,000 people killed each year on the road.
