British trader killed, robbed in central Philippines

A British businessman was killed, while his wife was robbed by a group of armed men in the central Philippine province of Negros Occidental, local police said Tuesday.

According to Inspector Reina Protacio, provincial police spokesperson, Anthony Nicholas, 64, a British national was driving a motorcycle on his way home with his Filipina wife, Judith Nicolas and helper, Rona Lirasan, when they were waylaid by two armed men. The incident happened around 7 p.m. local time Monday in Sipalay city.

The suspects shot Nicholas multiple times. The armed men then pointed a gun at Nicolas and Lirasan and forcibly took a bag containing money worth 10,000 pesos (225 U.S. dollars) and Nicolas ' mobile phone. The suspects fled after taking the cash and mobile phone.

Nicholas was later rushed to the hopspital but he was proclaimed dead on arrival.
