At least six people died and five others fell ill after consuming illicit liquor, popularly known as hooch, in the southern Indian state of Kerala Monday, a senior police official said.

"The victims consumed hooch from a local shop at Kuttippuram. While bodies of two persons were found at Kuttippuram railway station, four others died at a hospital after getting admitted there. The others are undergoing treatment at the hospital," the official said.

"The manager of the toddy shop has been arrested. A probe has been ordered into the incident," he added.

Meanwhile, Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that murder charges would be brought against the culprits selling illicit brew.

"The investigation is on. If it is proved that the deaths were due to consumption of illicit liquor, stringent action, including slapping murder charges, would be taken against those behind the sale of the toddy," Balakrishnan said.
