A regional meeting on disaster relief began here on Thursday to promote cooperation on disaster relief management.

The 10th meeting of the ARF Inter-Sessional Meeting on Disaster Relief was attended by representatives from the ASEAN Regional Forum and the European Union members as well as executive directors from various disaster management centers in the region

ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan and Bhichit Rattakul, Executive Director of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center gave speeches at the two-day meeting which will discuss and exchange views on the management of disaster relief to the victims of natural disaster.

ARF is an important forum in strengthening security and stability of the Asia-Pacific region, which also covers the issue of disaster relief cooperation.

After the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2008 Cyclone Nargis, causing severe damage to Southeast Asia, Thailand has become regional centre of disaster relief.

The meeting is co-hosted by Thailand and United States.
