A married couple was killed in an ambush in south restive province of Pattani early Wednesday, local media said.

Unidentified gunmen killed the couple on a road at Huay Ngo village in Khoke Pho district about 03:30 a.m., the Bangkok Post online quoted Khoke Pho police chief as saying.

The attack happened when Surasak Kiatkaew, 50, and his wife Kanueng, 52, were on a motorcycle heading to their rubber plantation, the police said.

Police believed separatist militants were responsible for the killings.

Thailand's deep South, which includes the three southernmost provinces Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat as well as four districts of Songkla province, has undergone separatistviolence with over 4, 000 killed since 2004.
