The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has confirmed that fire exchange between service members of the alliance and police in Badghis province of Afghanistan left four persons including two service members dead on Wednesday.

"An Afghan National Police member, two International Security Assistance Force service members and one civilian were killed during a shooting incident in Badghis province western Afghanistan today," a statement released by the alliance said.

The cause of the shooting incident is still unclear, the statement said, adding more details will be released as they become available.

Earlier in the morning, Mohammad Nasir Nazari, the head of Provincial Council of Badghis province, in talks with Xinhua confirmed the incident, saying the violent event happened at 08:00 a.m. local time when an Afghan police was killed by Spanish forces due to unknown reasons.

He also added that the incident triggered a protest demonstration during which four Spanish soldiers were injured.

More than 800 Spanish soldiers have stationed in Afghanistan within the framework of NATO-led ISAF forces to help stabilize peace in the post-Taliban country.
